ACT! Tips and Tricks - December, 2002

What's the difference between the new ACT! for Palm O/S and the free ACTLink 2.0?

The ACTLink 2.0 software allows you to do limited synchronizations between ACT! and handheld devices that use the Palm O/S.  It is also unreliable if you hot sync with a database that synchronizes with a host database.  In addition, any appointments that are created on the handheld device are linked to your record only, rather than the actual person with whom you want to schedule the appointment.

The ACT! for Palm O/S software is an application that runs on your Palm O/S handheld device.  It overcomes issues with the ACTLink 2.0 and has the look, feel, and functionality of ACT! on your PC.  It can only be run on Palm devices that have at least a 33 Mhz processor and at least 8 MB of RAM, though 16 MB is recommended. If you want to synchronize Notes, History, and Appointments, it is not recommended to synchronize more than 1,000 ACT! contacts. There is a special price promotion of $59.95 until the end of 2002.  Click here for more information.

How do I import my Outlook data into ACT?

If you are using Outlook 97 or newer, with just a few mouse clicks you'll be ready to go.  NOTE: From Outlook Express, you will first need to export your messages into Outlook.  Also, it is always a good idea to back up your database before importing records from other files.

  1. Open ACT!.
  2. Choose FILE>DATA EXCHANGE.
  3. In the File Type drop-down menu, select Outlook and click Next.
  4. If you are using Microsoft Exchange Server, select Options, otherwise click Next and go to Step 6.
  5. Select Exchange contacts, click OK and click Next..
  6. While on the Contact Map Screen, scroll down until you see "BODY" on the Left list of fields.
  7. On the Right list of fields, click the down button and select Notes.
  8. Click Finish.
